Harriet W. Hopf
Harriet W. Hopf, M.D., professor of anesthesiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, serves as Director for the School of Medicine's Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) Program and Director of Mentoring in the medical school's Faculty Administration Office.
Hopf joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 2006. Before that, she was professor of anesthesia and surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). In recognition of her abilities as a mentor, she received the UCSF Graduate Students Association Faculty Mentorship Award in 1999 and was elected to the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators at UCSF in 2004. In 2008-09 she completed the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program at Drexel University.
In August 2009, the Board of Directors of the Association of American Medical Colleges approved the creation of the Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS). This action established the longstanding Women in Medicine program as a formal AAMC professional development group, congruent with other AAMC groups. This new group replaces the former Women in Medicine and Women Liaison Officers (WLO) network. The mission of the GWIMS is to advance the full and successful participation of women in all roles within academic medicine. The GWIMS will serve as a national forum to advance women's success in medicine and science by addressing gender equity, recruitment and retention, awards and recognition, and career advancement.
WIMS at the University of Utah addresses the missions and goals of the national GWIMS through a number of programs and initiatives. Monthly programs in 2010 focused on tools for success, including negotiation, decision-making, and understanding medical school finances. The WIMS Keynote Speaker for 2010 will address advancing women by providing tools for success. Dr. Hopf is working to create collaborations with other campus and Utah women's organizations, including the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women and the Utah Medical Association Women Physician's Section.
